DIABETES DOUBTS
All over the world, 50% of victims are with undiagnosed diabetes. This is not admissible, as undiagnosed diabetes may lead to vicious effects. So if you recognize any diabetic symptoms in you, it is imperative to visit a diabetologist and elucidate your diabetes doubts.
Diabetologists may do a few diabetes tests to know your blood sugar level. Apart from symptoms and signs, these tests are also obligatory to diagnose diabetes. But you might have a lot of doubts regarding the diagnosis methods. Few questions that arise in your mind can be
- What is the purpose of taking these tests to confirm my diabetes, if I am symptomatic?
- Why so many types of tests just to check my blood sugar level? And so on.
I think this blog is ample to clear all such doubts about diabetes detection, complications and management.
Various types of diabetes tests
Depending on the symptoms and signs, the doctor might suggest several tests or repeated tests to detect diabetes.
Fasting blood sugar test (FBS)
FBS test is for measuring the fasting blood sugar level. Hence, it can be done only after 12 hours of fasting. It is always preferred to take this test in the morning, as it will be more or less 12 hours from their dinner. Fasting sugar level between 110 to 125 indicates prediabetes while that more than 126 indicates diabetes.
Post prandial blood sugar test (PPBS)
PPBS test is to detect the blood sugar level 2hrs after food. If the sugar level after food is more than 180 milligrams per deciliter(mg/dL), it indicates diabetes. Doctors usually prefer to do both FBS and PPBS tests to compare the results of these tests. Most commonly, fasting sugar level is less than after food sugar level, but if the fasting sugar level is higher than after food sugar level, it is said to be reactive hypoglycemia which includes abnormal secretion of insulin.
HbA1c test
This test is used to detect the average blood sugar level for 3 months. This is the predominant test of diabetes used to determine the beginning of diabetes. This test can be taken at any time, no fasting or time limit after food is required. This test clears the complication if FBS and PPBS read blood glucose levels at borders of the diabetes range. IF your FBS and PPBS results are just below diabetes range and A1c is at the diabetic range, then you are diabetic.
Oral glucose tolerance test (GTT)
GTT is preferred for prediabetic patients and for pregnant women to detect gestational diabetes. In GTT, the patient is asked to drink a full cup of glucose water; tested after one hour and subsequently at two hours. Normally, if GTT falls between 140mg/dl and 200mg/dl at two hours of GTT, it indicates prediabetes and if it is above 200mg/dl, it indicates diabetes. While gestational diabetes is confirmed if the GTT reads above 140mg/dl at two hours. If GTT results show higher value at one hour than that at two hours, it is said to be reactive hypoglycemia.
